Vocabulaire et lecture dans l'apprentissage des langues

This post is about vocabulary learning. There are two camps. The one, and Stephen Krashen is the leading proponent, is in favour of extensive reading as the best way to learn new words. The other camp, and perhaps Paul Nation is their champion, suggest that we can effectively learn from lists of words and that we need to do so in order to learn the less frequently used words of the language. I believe that a combination of both is what is needed. That is what we have at The Linguist, and that is what I talk about here in French.

I do not have any Japanese or Chinese word processing on my computer just now, but I will get some repeat this podcast in those languages later.

Comment doit-on apprendre le vocabulaire? Certains, comme Stephen Krashen, sont en faveur de la lecture extensive, "extensive reading". Selon Krashen, les mots s'apprenent naturellement si on lit beaucoup. Bien sur que je simplifie, mais l'idee c'est que avec assez de "input", les mots s'apprennent. Pour Paul Nation et ses adeptes, les mots doivent faire l'object une etude deliberee, et on peut meme apprendre le vocabulaire sans une lecture extensive. Les gens qui soutiennet cette position estiment que a fur et a mesure qu'on avance dans la langue, les nouveaux mots apparaissent de plus en plus rarement dans la lecture, donc la lecture n'est plus un moyen efficace pour augmenter son vocabulaire.

Pour moi le debat est un peu artificiel. En fait il faut cominer les deux approches. C'est ce que nous faisons a The Linguist.
