It's been a few months now that we have had our members volunteer to help with the translations on the site. Today, we awarded points to those members for their contributions. Almost 80,000 points were awarded today. Thank you all for your contributions!

There are still opportunities for others to translate the site and the help pages. There are over 40,000 points yet to be awarded for completing all languages on the site.

We still need some help in the following languages:

Swedish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Dutch, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish

Reflexiones personales o ideas descabelladas: Un espacio de opinió personal sobre temas varios. Procuraré crear siempre dos versiones para cada texto, una a una velocidad natural para los usuarios más avanzados, y la otra con una narración más lenta y una mejor dicción para los estudiantes de un nivel intermedio. Creo que uno de los aspectos positivos de esta doble versión es que uno puede empezar estudiando la versión lenta y, con el tiempo, repasar de nuevo la lección, pero en la versión natural/real. De este modo, seremos conscientes de nuestros avances en la comprensión. Me parece un ejercicio interesante, ya me diréis...

Chinese and Japanese Are Out of Beta

We are happy to announce that today we have taken Chinese and Japanese out of Beta! Finally!

Actually, for the most part, those two languages have enjoyed full functionality for a few months but now that the bugs are fully worked out we feel confident in taking this step. We did recently add the space removal option for these language texts for all you Chinese and Japanese learners.

Sure, there are other improvements we can make and plan to make but this is a special day for LingQ! Chinese and Japanese learners are no longer second class citizens... ;-)

We just pushed a small change to the Lesson page. You will now see a "What's Next" section at the bottom of the lesson text. If you are studying a lesson from a collection and there is a next lesson in that collection, you will see an "Open next lesson in collection" link. In addition, you will see an "Open collection" link which just takes you to the page of the collection you are currently studying, as well as, a "Choose new lesson in library" link which just takes you to the Library.

We hope this small enhancement makes navigation easier and faster for newbies and veteran LingQers alike.

Show/Hide Spaces in Asian Languages

We just pushed an update that allows you to show or hide the spacing in Japanese and Chinese texts. I know some of you were not happy with the spacing introduced by our word splitter. Especially, you intermediate and advanced learners can now simply hide the spacing. The words are still split in the same places, however. Enjoy!

We have just launched our new Invite a Friend and Referral program. You will find the Invite page when you click on the Earn Points link in the top right corner of the site. You will also find links to "Get Free Points" on the Account and Points pages.

You will see that you will be able to cut and paste a referral url into an email or onto a website or blog. Or, you can send an email invitation containing this url, to your contacts from Google, Yahoo or Hotmail or manually enter your friends' emails and send them invitations.

Incidentally, we have also added your referral url to your banners and badges. Therefore, anyone coming to the site after clicking on your banner or badge will also be tracked as a referral.

Earn Points When They Upgrade

Any of your friends who do sign up after clicking on your referral url will be tracked by the system and you will receive 200 points each month for any referral who upgrades to Basic, Plus or Premium Membership. You will receive this referral bonus every month for as long as your friend continues as a Basic, Plus or Premium member.

You can see which of your friends have registered and which of your friends have upgraded, on the Referrals page.

New Banners and Badges

I am embarrassed to tell you all how long ago it was that Chris from New Zealand suggested we have LingQ signature banners for posting on Forums. Chris, we finally have signature banners! You will see that they show how many words you know in a particular language.

Here are the banners:

You can find banners and badges on the goodies page. You can get to this page by clicking on the new badge above your wall on the profile page. Choose your language and style and then copy the HTML code and paste it to your blog and add it to your email or forum signature.

The banners are bigger and wider, good for websites and forum signature banners while the badges are smaller and narrower, perfect for a blog sidebar.

We are really excited about this new way for you to show your friends how you are doing on LingQ! And, of course, it's also a great way to help spread the word about LingQ!

As you try to use these banners and badges please share with the rest of us in the community any good places you put them or tricks you used to get them to fit. I found a few good places and tricks already and will post on those shortly. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy these banners as much as I have the last few days while testing them out.
