Writing and speaking

It was a very informative discussion. I felt relieved by1 Tracey's remark:2 " Putting words and phrases together in a natural way when you are writing will help you also when you are speaking." It is just what I have done for years at home. When I started learning English, there were not as many useful tools3 and materials to help me learn as there are now.4 Therefore, I found a penpal to write to in English while I listened to radio programs for English learners. I repeated and shadowed5 dialogues to memorize important sentences. I didn't have many opportunities6 to talk with native speakers. When I finally had the first chance, I did not find it as hard7 to express my thoughts in simple English. Another piece of Tracey's advice,8 " Do not write how you talk. Talk how you write,"9 is almost an eye opener to me. Steve mentioned that some students10 said they do not need to write. I guess many non-native speakers, including me,11 are eager to speak fluently with wonderful pronunciation, and hopefully sound cool:-)12 I have never been abroad, but lots of students would like to focus on speaking so that they can communicate with people at the airport, a host family's house,13 or other such places, 14 so that they can survive overseas.15 I have no such need,16 but honestly I like to pick up17 phrases used in movies and TV dramas18 that are never taught at schools here. However, using those sentences in a conversation may sound strange to native English speakers,19 and I may even disgrace myself.20 A woman with a teenage child21 should not talk like a teenager ! I will try to read more good quality English22 as I think it will help me to improve my other skills23 as well. Thank you, Tracey and Steve !

Most people learning English have limited opportunities to speak. That is out of your control. So concentrate on your listening and reading. Build up your vocabulary. Your speaking skills will come if you hae a solid base.There are ample resources on the Internet.
