Three tips for learning English

Click here to listen to a recording of this writing sample about tips to improve your English.

There are three very important things I learned from The Linguist that are helping me to improve my English.1 These are very simple things, but2 I never do them right. I think that is the reason why I listen and read a lot, but make very little progress.3

The first thing is listening carefully to sounds over and over.4 Concentrate on the intonation. My ears were spoiled. They could not hear the differences5 in the sounds.6 Now, I try to notice what I hear and I remember the sounds.7 I train my ears to get used to the sounds,8 so that when I hear words,9 I can spell them. If I can listen to them clearly,10 then I can repeat them verbally correctly.11

The second thing is reading carefully. Notice how the words are used together. Observe the logic of English and get used to it.12 Learn how writers start a sentence. Learn what transition words and phrases they use to make the sentences flow together smoothly. Then imitate and use them when writing.13

In a newspaper, there is a daily column14 for office workers who are learning English.15 I did not read it,16 because the article was difficult17 for me. Yesterday, I took a look at this column. I saw only two words I did not know. I understood every word in the vocabulary list. I had already learned them18 from The Linguist library. Obviously, my vocabulary has increased. This is the third important thing I learned from The Linguist. Review new words and phrases frequently and your vocabulary will increase easily.

I am an intermediate level English learner. I need a breakthrough so badly. I want to be an advanced learner soon. However, I am not hard working, so I know I have a long way to go.
